Dissatisfaction,
that is the word that describes how ordinary Nigerians feel about this present
administration. Not only is the administration under-delivering on nearly all
facets, it is unable to do anything by itself except make the proclamation: “I
want to reassure all Nigerians.” Those assurances are now taken for a pinch of
dust.
Nigerians
were dissatisfied when the administration led by His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck
Jonathan through his media aide Dr. Reuben Abati announced a new committee to
reconcile and rectify subsidy payments to importers, a role Nigerians believe
the government can accomplish without a committee. They got even more
dissatisfied when news broke out that Ice Energy Limited had one Aig-Imoukhuede
as a director and coincidentally the chairman of the new committee. Ice Energy
was fingered by the Farouk Lawan ad-hoc committee for receiving subsidy
payments and not having any verified PMS delivered.
Dissatisfaction
no longer captures or truly portrays the feeling of dissatisfaction in the
land. It has become an inadequate word. Gradually, the indifference experienced
during the arduous regimes of the military era has stepped in and Nigerians are
desperately longing for a breath of fresh air. But it will not come, not by the
way things are going anyway. Nigerians do not need a weather forecast to tell
them that this is a season of national dissatisfaction.
So why should
the president go ahead to appoint as chairman a man fingered by the ad-hoc
committee as chairman of a new committee? It was widely perceived as fishy for
the president to nominate an indicted company director to head the new
committee.
But this
morning, those Nigerians who thought the president did do his homework well
were disappointed yet again. Ice Energy Limited came up with a release that
among other things told Nigerians that the company has another Aigbovbioise
Aig-Imoukhuede as one of its directors and not the Access bank managing
director as previously held. The two Imoukhuedes are however related. The
question then is: does a brother investigate brother? Nigerians have framed a
parable: ‘he whose brother is in heaven, does not burn in hell.’
It is against
this backdrop that there is even more disappointment. The president is unable
to rise to the challenge of providing the leadership many hoped for when over
30million of them lined up to thumb his party into power. They had hoped this
lucky acting president would go ahead to transform their country within a short
while. Today, there is a greater feeling of ethnic sentimental attachment as
they are disappointed yet again at the failure of this present administration
to provide the much needed leadership that will unite Nigerians on the march to
nationhood.
On what issue
are Nigerians not dissatisfied? This morning, the Boko Haram claimed
responsibility for the killings that took place in Plateau state which left
over 140 dead. The new National Security Adviser Colonel Sambo Dasuki had
promised to eliminate the sect before Ramadan. It is not yet Ramadan, and there
appears to be no end in sight for this group or their activities. Nigerians are
already dissatisfied with the new NSA for boasting before putting on his boots.
One group of
Nigerians living in the northern part of Nigeria is even more dissatisfied with
the Goodluck administration. The Christian Association of Nigeria this morning
through its spokesperson in the north, Pastor, Sunday Oibe insisted that the
association is tired of the usual condemnation and rhetoric that follows these
attacks. CAN insists that they have lost confidence in the Special Task Force
stationed in Plateau state.
One of the
elements of a valid state is faith by citizens of that state in the powers of
the said state to execute justice and keep the peace. For every second that
ticks away, Nigerians are losing that faith as there appears to be no work to
justify their faith in this republic. Little wonder the increased cling to
ethnic sentiments and severe distrust for other ethnic groups that make up
Nigeria. As this season of dissatisfaction continues to shower woes on the
Nigerian people, the leaders are acting like the weather though.
In this
season of dissatisfaction where even the word dissatisfaction has become as
incompetent as the regime at describing the feeling, there is little
satisfaction to cheer about somewhere. D-Tigers, Nigeria’s national basketball
team did the country proud by qualifying for the very first time for the
Olympic Games. It is hoped that this team will not toe the line of the Super
Eagles or the present administration by dissatisfying Nigerians when the games
begin.
