Soccer Comedy Series  (April 10 2013)

Ahead of tonight’s UEFA Champions League clash between Juventus and Bundeliga kings Bayern Munich, Andrea Pirlo has made vehement declarations to the Bianconerri faithful. The legendary midfielder has promised not to shave his beard should Juventus fail to win on the night.

The midfield maestro who admitted that his side were not at their best when both sides met at the Allianz Arena last week has told Juve and Calcio fans worldwide to expect the Germans to throw in the towel at half time. The regista is determined to prove that his beards will inspire Juventus to a tactical showing that will leave the Bavarians wishing they hadn't won the Bundesliga that early.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not slept since last night. He has developed insomnia for two reasons. First the Swede is unhappy that Lionel Messi will not start the fixture and it is a source of concern for the PSG goals talisman that the most dangerous player in the world will not start against him.

Ibrahimovic: I am not happy, I have not slept well in two days because Messi will not start. I am very sad that Barcelona will have an excuse when we qualify tonight. Another reason I am sad is because the referee is my enemy. I meet him each time I go to check out the latest cars. He (Kuippers) comes there to complain about his old car.

He is always complaining and does not like the fact that I am taller than him. He is my enemy. Last time, he challenged me to a match on public game console and while I was winning, he suddenly awarded two penalties to himself. I haven’t slept since I knew he will be officiating tonight’s fixture.

Elsewhere, Roman Abrahimovic and Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck have called all the coaching agents in the world to submit CVs of their clients for consideration. The agents of L. F. Scolari, Di Mateo, Carlo Ancelotti, and Claudio Ranieri have all refused to print their CVs. The firing check-book has been made ready as Roman Abrahimovic is ready to fire interim manager come end of the season.  Rafa Benitez has been staring at his phone in wait of the credit alert from Mr. Abrahimovic.

And finally, John Obi Mikel has admitted that he enjoys playing in the UEFA Europa League because playing the UEFA Champions League on his game console is better. The Nigerian who deliberately missed a penalty to prove that he is a penalty specialist at the just concluded AFCON has promised Chelsea fans that he will score a goal for them whenever Chelsea have a fixture against Wycombe Wanderers at a pre-season friendly.

Mikel misses thrill of Champions League

Now remember, this is the real news that relaxes you ahead of big games. Do not say these words on the streets or you will be held liable for spreading the real news.

Champions League Tactical Drama

Football is a dynamic sport. It attracts thousands of followers to match venues on match days and billions of TV viewers worldwide. The appealing of football varies from person to person but most undoubtedly, the one feature that many cannot dispute is its unpredictability. The underdog can match the top dog if they take their chances. Many cases of this thrill abound which leaves many pundits shocked and neutrals entertained.

Last night, in Barcelona, the top dog failed to do the expected. The underdog with the right tactics, faith and belief continued to maintain their cool despite the fact that nothing was seemingly going their way. Chelsea had conceded a goal and then had influential captain sent off for a silly knee on Sanchez. In the final submission, it is Barcelona’s failure to be flexible that cost them dearly.

Barcelona failed to do anything different. They never had a plan b. Predictably Chelsea would and indeed parked the bus as well as dropping really deep. They also favored the standoff marking made popular by AC Milan meaning that the defending team can anticipate moves, tackle correctly and still conserve the energy needed for counter attacks. Guardiola though refused to do anything differently. The Blaugrana continued to try very hard to play through the defence. No one was going to try to run at the back line, a desperately needed tactic. Or to try to shoot from distance. The insistence on trying to walk the ball into the net amounts to the parable doing the same things and expecting a different result.

True, the set of tactics Barcelona played has always worked, but it cannot be an absolute tactic for all situations. Barcelona for all their beautiful football will not be in this year’s finale to be played in Munich.

Later tonight, Real Madrid will attempt to overturn the deficit from the first leg at Bayern Munich. Jose Mourinho’s team is the most expensively assembled squad on the planet starring players like C.Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Mesut Ozil. The Galacticos know very well that they cannot afford to slip up in defence especially in the full back positions considering the prowess and form of the opposition’s wide men. Indeed, Ribery and Robben can upset Madrid’s backline and hurt them from thence.

Mourinho is without doubt the best manager known to the modern game. He has won a title every year since he took charge at Portuguese side FC Porto. He expectedly, will look to adopt another tactic used by AC Milan to deny Arsenal wing play and speed which is zonal marking the wide men to force them to the middle. But Mourinho is famed more for his defensive and counter attack tactics than their opponents who have always been an attacking side.

Possession hungry teams can be beaten with long searching balls sent to the width for run ins. Will Madrid deploy that tactic tonight? Bayern on the other hand will not be comfortable defending a narrow one goal lead but will look to get the much needed away goal early on. In form striker Mario Gomez must up his game from last time and look to get the better of strange centre back pairing of Sergio Ramos and Pepe. Jupp Heynckes’ men must not let Madrid harry them into surrendering possession in midfield as Real Madrid will counter attack with more through passes than the Bayern back line led by Lahm can cope with or anticipate.

Whatever happens tonight, we expect some really good football.
Footy PlayTalk analyst prediction: Bayern to qualify on aggregate score.

Chelsea's defeat of Barcelona on Wednesday is proof that the better team should and does not always win. Ramires ran on to a Frank Lampard long range pass before squaring the ball to a well positioned Didier Drogba for a good finish. Chelsea 1, Barcelona nil. For all of Barcelona's possession, shots on and off target, chances created, set pieces as well as passes completed, it was Chelsea who came out unscathed.

Barcelona's profligacy in front of goal was evident when Sanchez, Fabregas and Messi had efforts go wide. Pedro and Messi also hit the woodwork while Busquets and Iniesta were unlucky in front of goal. How much does luck play as a factor in the modern game? So many analysts and pundits had written Chelsea's chances off before the match. Barcelona are so good they all asserted. Messi and Iniesta cannot find it difficult to locate Cech's goal. Chelsea fans themselves were apprehensive though some of them had to put up bold faces in an attempt to show toughness.

The philosophies of the game are always put on contest when two dissimilar sides meet. Total football versus Catenacio. While one style favours a packed defense and coordinated counter attacks, the other argues that possession and patient build ups are essential to keep the fans intrigued. Some realists though would opt for a third philosophy called the Pragmatist approach which requires teams to be able to absorb pressure, build up correctly, attack and where unable to keep possession, to counter attack.

Former England boss, Glenn Hoddle had before the match insisted that Chelsea was the team with the most pragmatic approach to challenge Barcelona. He is right considering Barcelona's inability to convert their dominance of possession into the most essential stat in football: goals. The team that could not keep possession could score the one important goal that might give them leverage when the tie is settled come next week at the Nou Camp. Possession is not everything, make penetration and score.

On an individual level, Didier Drogba was brilliant on the night for converting Chelsea's one and only chance. Victor Valdes is an embarrassment to a club like Barcelona. He is not as good as the rest of the team. His attempt to save Drogba's effort can best be described as amateurish or childish. Barcelona have a chink in their amour that goes un-noticed most times but it is not one they can long endure. They have been able to get away with that chink as a result of their impeccable dominance of possession. But adaptability is one feature Barcelona must develop or have their reign end as a result of their inability to play teams that park the bus or their failure to get a better goal keeper.

AMNESTY: IN WHOSE INTEREST?

The Third Mainland Bridge is Africa’s and Nigeria’s longest bridge. Its economic importance and significance to Lagos and indeed to Nigeria cannot be wished away. It was shocking and worrisome to learn that terrorist organisation Boko Haram have come south to Lagos and made the bridge its target.  The sect has been responsible for numerous deaths and destruction of property worth hundreds of millions in Naira. A lot of persons have been displaced as a result of the wicked acts of this sect. The administration of President Goodluck Jonathan has had a torrid time dealing with the menace of the group and has thus far remained unsuccessful. Boko Haram is an ideological organization with hard line terrorist operations. It wants or at least is said to want a Sharia state all over northern Nigeria. Having links with other terrorist organizations including Al Qaeda is proof of its outsourcing capabilities. In terms of efficient organization and impact, the sect’s attacks have been hi

LAI'S JOLLOF RICE

I had a neighbour once. A good neighbour. He told us back then that   # JollofRice   was quite tasty in Senegal. Tonight though, the minister of Culture, Tourism and Information Alh. Lai Mohammed was asked on   # CNN 's Quest Means Business "which country makes the best #JollofRice" and Richard Quest actually had a bowl brought in for his view. "I would say Senegal" came the reply from the minister. "There is shock from the country" predicted Richard Quest. Twitter Nigeria is quite displeased with the res ponse and I'm certain others will follow. Two key areas for me in the interview: what are you positioning Nigeria as with Nollywood? Lai's response showed emphatically the directionless leadership of the incumbent administration. You do not have to be a brand strategist or a digital marketer to project Nigeria to the world as being the place for this and that! Oga Lai, that was your moment and you said something else. Then when we thou
